Blinking Lights
Originally scheduled for September 13
You have undoubtedly seen this little object. It’s a yellow
plastic light, round in shape, with a clamp on the bottom which
allows you to put it on top of a wooden sawhorse. Usually used in
large groups, they warn motorists of the danger of a construction
zone or other possible accident-causing sites. The light itself is
designed to blink for a long time. It isn’t particularly bright, but
it is intended to be used in groups so that you will see the outline
of the danger. One of the most interesting things about it is this:
there is no on/off switch. Once it is set in place, the warning
should last as long as possible.
Communion, in a very real
sense, serves much the same purpose. Seldom do you see a communion
service which is grandiose and designed to attract a lot of
attention. But our Lord was quite specific about this: it is
designed to warn you of the judgment to come. We are told that
Christ will wait to drink from that cup, until the day he comes. As
such, like the blinking light, communion is common and serves the
purpose of warning you of the judgment to come.
What, then,
would Christ have us do a communion to recognize this fact?
·
Begin with self-examination. Look at your life and see if there is
something that needs to be changed. If there is, pray for his
assistance.
· In your
prayers get to the point of thanksgiving. You have been saved by
grace — His grace. Be thankful.
·
Look forward to the day when he returns. We don’t know when that
will be; it might be today. Make sure that you are with him when he
does.
When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound
end time shall be no more
when the saved of earth shall gather over on
the other shore
in the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
